I am seeking to build on my fire fighting career, only problem is I don't know what I would like to do in fire fighting there are so many options. I have only ever done volunteer fire fighting and haven't had any experience beyond 6 months of training. I really want to go beyond volunteer fire fighting and be a career fire fighter. What are some of the careers you can build onto in fire fighting??????  less

"Years in Public Safety: 1-5". Rookies, they say the darndest things. SO, don't listen to THEIR BS either. So, after 35 years in the biz, I learned not to argue with folks who aren't capable of participating in an intelligent discussion, they will beat you with their stupidity and drag you down to their level in the process.
However, I do wish to clarify to Kimberly why I said what I said. I know several female Firefighters who are 40+ and one thing all of them will agree, it's dang tough to be on the trucks at that age. All I was trying to say is that the BEST Fire Safety Educators I know are Female Firefighters. Being a nozzle-toting, Halligan swingin' Firefighter cannot last forever, even for guys. And I know this because those Female Firefighter friends have told me so. G'nite!  less

Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) The Safety Hood
Garrett Morgan patented a safety hood and smoke protector after seeing firefighters struggling from the smoke they encountered in the line of duty and hearing about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. His device used a wet sponge to filter out smoke and cool the air.His invention became known nationally when he and three other men used it to save several men after a 1916 tunnel explosion under Lake Erie.Cleveland's newspapers and city officials initially ignored Morgan's personal acts of heroism as the first to rush into the tunnel for the rescue, and it took years for the city to recognize his contributions.Eventually, Morgan was awarded a gold Medal of Bravery by prominent citizens of Cleveland and a gold medal for bravery from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.  less

  • Joyce W went to Indianapolis to the FDIC and then spend a couple days in Chicago....it was awesome...
  • Adam Schreibman Gone but not forgotten. Brother when you weep for me, remember that it was meant to be. Lay me down and when you leave, remember I'll be at your sleeve. In every dark and choking hall, I'll be there as you slowly crawl. On every roof in driving snow, I'll hold your coat and you will know. ... In cellars hot with searing heat, at windows where a gate you meet. In closets where young children hide, you know I'll be there at your side. The house from which I now respond, is overstaffed with heroes gone. Men who answered one last bell, did the job and did it well. As firemen we understand, that death's a card dealt in our hand. A card we hope we never play, but one we hold there anyway. That card is something we ignore, as we crawl across a weakened floor. For we know that we're the only prayer, for anyone that might be there. So remember as you wipe your tears, the joy I knew throughout the years. As I did the job I loved to do, I pray that thought will see you through. Author Unknown.
